A 47-year-old Pretoria man has been released on R2,000 bail by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court following allegations that he deliberately infected his partner with HIV out of jealousy.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the accused concealed his HIV-positive status and falsely claimed to be negative throughout their relationship, which spanned from October 2025 to June 2026. The deception unraveled on June 26, 2026, when the 38-year-old victim discovered antiretroviral (ARV) medication inside his bag.
Prosecution authorities reported that when confronted, the man admitted to his diagnosis and confessed to intentionally transmitting the virus to prevent her from pursuing other relationships. The victim subsequently tested positive at a medical facility on July 25, 2026, and reported the incident to law enforcement the following day.
During the court proceedings, the State elected not to oppose the suspect’s release, noting he was not deemed a flight risk. The matter has been adjourned to August 27, 2026, to set a date for the regional court trial, where he continues to face a charge of attempted murder.
