Ghanaian Influencer Faces US Trial Over $8m Romance Scam

​ACCRA, GHANA – Frederick Kumi, the Ghanaian social media personality widely known as “Abu Trica,” was extradited to the United States on Thursday, July 9, 2026, to stand trial for his alleged role in a sophisticated, multi-million dollar romance fraud network.

​The Allegations

​U.S. prosecutors contend that Kumi, also known by the alias Emmanuel Kojo Baah Obeng, was a key operative in a criminal syndicate targeting elderly Americans. According to the indictment, the network utilized Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to fabricate online identities, allowing them to forge intimate, long-distance relationships with victims on social media and dating platforms.

​Once trust was established through persistent and emotionally charged communication, the perpetrators allegedly solicited funds under false pretenses, including claims of urgent medical crises, travel expenses, or lucrative investment opportunities. The proceeds were reportedly funneled to co-conspirators before being distributed to associates in Ghana and the United States.

​A Controversial Departure

His defense attorney, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, reported being in court on Thursday to file a motion to halt the transfer, only to discover that his client had already departed on a Delta Airlines flight.

​Barker-Vormawor has publicly accused the Ghanaian government of bypassing judicial oversight, characterizing the move as a breach of due process that raises “profound constitutional questions”. Conversely, Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dominic Ayeni, defended the state’s actions, asserting that all legal requirements were met following the dismissal of a habeas corpus application filed by the defense.
