Tottenham Hotspur have moved aggressively to reshape their squad, reaching an agreement to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali for a record-breaking fee of up to £100 million.
The 26-year-old Italian international represents the latest pillar in manager Roberto De Zerbi’s ambitious overhaul of the North London side. Following a narrow escape from relegation last season, Spurs have abandoned their historic wage constraints, empowering De Zerbi to build a new-look midfield. The deal, which includes an initial £92.5 million plus £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons, eclipses the £85 million fee agreed just yesterday for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes.
A New Era in North London
Tonali, who joined Newcastle in 2023 for £55 million, was highly sought after by rivals including Manchester City and Arsenal. He has reportedly agreed to a six-year contract worth approximately £275,000 per week. His arrival is seen as a major statement of intent from the Lewis family, who have promised substantial investment to restore the club’s competitiveness.
De Zerbi, who took charge in March to guide the team to safety, has been vocal about his requirements for an athletic, technically proficient midfield capable of high-intensity play. Tonali, known for his tactical intelligence and leadership, is expected to become the central figure of this new project.

Summer Squad Transformation
The acquisition of Tonali and Fernandes is part of a broader recruitment drive:
- Defensive Reinforcements: Jan Paul van Hecke has arrived from Brighton for £52 million.
- Experienced Additions: Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka have joined on free transfers, addressing leadership gaps in the dressing room.
Newcastle, meanwhile, prepare for a summer of transition as they look to reinvest the proceeds from Tonali’s sale to strengthen Eddie Howe’s squad.
