Recommitting to the Democratic Mandate
As Nigeria observed the 2026 Democracy Day, the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), under Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, paid glowing tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, the undisputed symbol of the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election.
In a national statement released on Friday, June 12, 2026, by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Zakari Nadabo, the opposition party noted that the anniversary should serve as a profound moment for national reflection rather than mere ceremonial remembrance. The party urged contemporary political leaders and citizens alike to embrace the core values of justice, accountability, transparency, and absolute respect for the will of the electorate.
“We pay tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and patriotism of the late Chief MKO Abiola and all heroes of democracy who stood firm in defence of democratic ideals during one of the most challenging periods in Nigeria’s political history,” Nadabo stated.
A Legacy Intertwined with History
The SDP holds a unique historical claim to the June 12 legacy, given that Chief MKO Abiola contested and won the annulled 1993 presidential election under its banner. Decades later, the party insists that the ultimate way to honor the sacrifices of Abiola, pro-democracy activists, civil society organizations, and journalists who fought military dictatorship is by building unassailable democratic institutions.

The call for credible elections carries renewed weight as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prepares for upcoming off-cycle elections, including the June 20 governorship poll in Ekiti State. The SDP itself has recently navigated intense internal turbulence, with the Court of Appeal and INEC firmly validating the legitimacy of the Gabam-led executive to field candidates and steering the party clear of unauthorized political coalitions.
Moving Beyond Personal Ambition
The statement concluded with an earnest plea to Nigeria’s political class to put national interests above personal or partisan gains. By prioritizing institutional integrity and social justice, the party believes Nigeria can avert the subversion of the popular vote that defined the 1993 crisis.
