​As Nigeria observed the 2026 Democracy Day, the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), under Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, paid glowing tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, the undisputed symbol of the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election.

​The SDP holds a unique historical claim to the June 12 legacy, given that Chief MKO Abiola contested and won the annulled 1993 presidential election under its banner. Decades later, the party insists that the ultimate way to honor the sacrifices of Abiola, pro-democracy activists, civil society organizations, and journalists who fought military dictatorship is by building unassailable democratic institutions.

​The call for credible elections carries renewed weight as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prepares for upcoming off-cycle elections, including the June 20 governorship poll in Ekiti State.
