AWKA – In a decisive move to enforce party discipline amidst simmering internal friction, the Anambra State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ratified the expulsion of seven high-ranking members.

The decision was finalized during a critical stakeholders’ meeting held in Awka on Friday, presided over by the State Chairman, Senator Emma Anosike. The sanctioned members were expelled for allegedly violating party guidelines by dragging the APC to court over fallout from the party’s recently concluded primary elections.

Among those whose expulsions were ratified are the state party Legal Adviser, Richard Egenti, alongside Ifeanyi Osegbo, Chukwudi Oji, Arinze Awogu, Tony Uche Ezekwelu, Bossy Nwoye, and Uju Onyeanusi. This development follows an earlier disciplinary sweep before the primaries, which saw 30 other members expelled for similar infractions.

Enforcing the Party Constitution

Addressing stakeholders, Senator Anosike emphasized that the party’s leadership was left with no option but to invoke constitutional discipline to preserve the unity of the state chapter. The State Publicity Secretary, Dr. Iyke Oliobi, clarified that the expulsions strictly adhered to Article 21, Sub-article 5 of the APC Constitution, which mandates members to exhaust all internal dispute resolution mechanisms before seeking judicial intervention.

”The seven members who dragged the party to court without first exhausting internal options for resolving disputes or disagreements remain expelled,” Anosike stated firmly.

However, the party left a window open for peace. Dr. Oliobi noted that the state working committee remains open to recalling the expelled politicians on the condition that they formally withdraw their pending lawsuits from the courts.

Financial Hurdles and the Road to Reconciliation

The meeting also shed light on the logistical and financial strains that plagued the party’s recent internal electoral processes. Senator Anosike acknowledged that funding constraints had significantly hindered several key activities during the primaries, but he praised the resilience of loyal party faithful.

”Despite the challenges, we urge members to remain committed to the party’s growth and work collectively toward strengthening the APC’s chances in future elections,” the Chairman urged.

In tandem with the punitive measures, the APC has shifted its focus toward healing internal fractures ahead of upcoming electoral battles in Anambra State. The stakeholders approved the immediate establishment of a high-powered reconciliation committee, spearheaded by Chief Obi Onwuachu. The newly formed panel has been mandated to engage aggrieved party members, address deep-seated grievances arising from the primaries, and foster a united front.

Emerging Concerns Over INEC Lists

As the party moves to consolidate its ranks, fresh external anxieties have emerged. Speaking to reporters shortly after the meeting, the newly designated State Legal Adviser, Cyprian Udenwa, expressed deep concern over the unauthorized proliferation of candidate lists on social media.

According to Udenwa, the lists—alleged to have originated from the Anambra State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)—are sparking unnecessary confusion, and the party is keeping a close watch on developments to safeguard its official nominees.
