Ghana MP Detained in Amsterdam Over Alleged $32M FBI Fraud Probe

​AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – The Parliament of Ghana has confirmed the detention of Kwame Ohene Frimpong, the Member of Parliament for the Asante Akyem North constituency, at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

​The lawmaker was reportedly intercepted by Dutch authorities over the weekend acting on a request linked to an ongoing investigation by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). While official charges have yet to be publicly filed by Dutch or U.S. prosecutors, sources close to the investigation suggest the probe centers on a massive $32 million international syndicate involving money laundering and romance scams.

​In a formal communique released Tuesday, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament, acknowledged that the House had been notified of the MP’s situation.

​”The Rt. Hon. Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter,” the statement read, adding that the public would be kept informed as more facts emerge.

​The Majority Chief Whip has also briefed parliamentary members, confirming that high-level diplomatic engagements are underway to clarify the legal grounds for the detention and whether the MP was traveling on official parliamentary business or in a private capacity.

​A History of Denials

​This is not the first time Mr. Frimpong’s name has been associated with such allegations. In October 2025, the lawmaker issued a staunch public denial regarding rumors of his involvement in fraudulent schemes. At the time, he claimed his identity was being impersonated by scammers to facilitate a travel and visa racketeering scheme.
