LAGOS — A Sunday morning commute turned bloody for several passengers in the Ojodu area of Lagos State after a commercial bus careened off the road and plunged into a ditch following a mechanical failure.
The accident occurred on Oba Ogunusi Road, directly opposite Babs Fafunwa Millennium School. The vehicle, a popular 14-seater “Danfo” bus, was reportedly heading inward toward the Victoria Island axis when the driver lost control.
Brake Failure Triggered Crash
According to a situational report from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident was a solo-vehicle crash triggered by a sudden brake failure. Unable to decelerate or navigate the stretch of road safely, the bus veered sharply off the asphalt and into a deep drainage ditch.
Witnesses at the scene described the moment of impact as “sudden and violent,” as passengers were tossed within the vehicle.
Emergency Response and Recovery
First responders from LASTMA arrived shortly after the incident to coordinate the rescue. At least four occupants, who sustained what officials described as “severe injuries,” were stabilized at the scene before being rushed to the Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate for urgent medical attention.
The traffic agency confirmed that despite the gravity of the crash, the wreckage did not cause a significant bottleneck for other motorists.
”Recovery operations were initiated immediately, and a tow truck was dispatched to extricate the bus from the ditch,” a LASTMA spokesperson stated. “There was no prolonged effect on the flow of traffic toward the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway or the Berger axis.”
Authorities have used this latest incident to remind commercial transport operators of the critical importance of regular vehicle maintenance, particularly the braking and suspension systems, to prevent avoidable tragedies on Lagos roads.
