MAIDUGURI – A somber cloud has enveloped the community of Borno following the tragic death of a 14-year-old secondary schoolgirl, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet in the safety of her own home. The incident, which occurred over the weekend, has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for stricter military discipline regarding the use of firearms during civilian events.
According to eyewitness accounts and family sources, the victim was inside her residence when a bullet, allegedly fired by a soldier participating in “celebratory gunfire” at a nearby wedding ceremony, pierced through the structure and struck her. Despite immediate efforts to seek medical intervention, the young student succumbed to her injuries before reaching the hospital.
The practice of celebratory gunfire, while traditional in some contexts, remains a prohibited and dangerous activity under Nigerian military law and civil statutes. Local residents have expressed deep grief and frustration, questioning why live ammunition was utilized in a densely populated residential area during a social gathering.
The Nigerian Army has yet to release a formal statement naming the personnel involved, but military sources indicate that an internal investigation has been launched to identify the soldier and determine the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the weapon. Community leaders are demanding justice, insisting that the perpetrator be held accountable to serve as a deterrent against such professional misconduct.
