The Lagos State Government (LASG), under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has launched a three-month amnesty program slashing the cost of replacing faded or damaged vehicle number plates from ₦30,000 to ₦20,000. Running from January to March 2026, this citizen-focused rebate targets both private and commercial vehicle owners statewide, aiming to enhance vehicle identification, bolster security, and improve road safety amid rising concerns over unreadable plates.
Purpose and Security Impact
Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), Mr. Rasheed Muri-Okunola, described the initiative as a proactive measure to address how worn plates from weather and prolonged use hinder traffic enforcement, crime prevention, and digital tracking. Clear number plates are vital for law enforcement, emergency responses, and overall public safety, with the amnesty encouraging voluntary compliance over penalties. This aligns with LASG’s balanced approach of empathy and enforcement to regulate Lagos roads effectively.
How to Access the Rebate
Motorists must act within the January-March window, visiting the MVAA Pilot Centre at Oshodi One Stop Centre or any of the agency’s 140 stations across the state. The discount applies only to faded, worn, or illegible existing plates—not new registrations, fancy plates, or other categories like articulated vehicles (₦90,000 standard) or dealer plates (₦100,000). Post-March, fees revert to ₦30,000 for standard plates, with full enforcement resuming.
Broader Context and Urgency
Announced around early January 2026 via official channels including LASG’s Facebook and website, the program responds to security challenges where faded plates complicate investigations and monitoring. Muri-Okunola urged immediate action: “This amnesty reduces financial burden while supporting safer Lagos roads.” Vehicle owners, especially in Nigeria’s bustling commercial hub, stand to save ₦10,000 by complying now.
