Lagos State deepened its role as Africa’s creative powerhouse by actively participating in the AFRIMA Music Village event on Friday, January 10, 2026, at Ikeja City Mall. Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, was represented by Permanent Secretary Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, who joined industry leaders and dignitaries to celebrate African music’s vibrancy. This engagement underscores Lagos’ strategic push to harness the creative sector for tourism growth and youth empowerment amid the ninth edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA).
Event Highlights and Performances
The AFRIMA Music Village served as a centerpiece of the broader African Music Festival, drawing policymakers, creatives, and stakeholders from across the continent and beyond. Electrifying live performances by diverse artists captivated attendees, blending cultural rhythms with high-energy displays that sparked excitement and pride in Africa’s musical heritage. Over 416 artists stormed Lagos for the festivities, with the event fostering vital industry partnerships and collaborations.

Government Commitment and Broader Impact
Lagos State’s involvement reflects a deliberate strategy to position the city as the continent’s entertainment hub, attracting global visitors and nurturing talents through initiatives like AFRIMA. The administration, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, pledged sustained support, including distributing 6,000 free tickets via local governments to ensure young people access the Music Village concert. This aligns with earlier announcements at a January 7 press conference, emphasizing culture’s role in socio-economic development, job creation, and international visibility.

AFRIMA 2026 Context
The ninth AFRIMA edition, hosted in Lagos from January 7 to 11, features key events like the Music Business Summit and culminates in awards at Eko Hotels and Suites. Backed by the African Union, the platform showcases African excellence to over 30 countries, with partners including the British High Commission. It builds on past success, amplifying cross-cultural ties and economic opportunities in music and tourism.
