Ogun State has consistently been at the forefront of infrastructural and economic development, and Governor Dapo Abiodun’s recent decision to take over the 9-megawatt hydro power plant at the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority marks another significant step towards achieving energy security and sustainable growth. This initiative aligns with his administration’s Ogun State Light Up Project, poised to transform the state’s power sector, boost industrialization, and unlock agricultural potential. The hydro power plant, commissioned in 1983, has remained largely underutilized for decades, despite its substantial potential. Of the three turbines installed, only one was ever commissioned, leaving stranded renewable energy that could have significantly contributed to Ogun State’s electricity supply. Rather than allow this vital asset to remain dormant like many federal projects, Governor Abiodun has proactively engaged the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to facilitate its takeover. His vision is not only to resuscitate the hydro plant but also to merge it with the 30-megawatt gas-fired power plant at Onijanganjangan. This strategic energy mix—combining hydro and gas power—ensures that Ogun State will have a steady, cleaner, and more reliable power supply for households, businesses, and industries. This initiative is set to drive economic productivity, attract investors, and create jobs across the state.Beyond electricity generation, Governor Abiodun has also recognized the agricultural potential of the vast land surrounding the Ogun-Osun River Basin. By leveraging the availability of water for irrigation, his administration plans to develop farm clusters, ensuring year-round food production in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Food Initiative. This initiative will boost food security by promoting large-scale farming, encourage agribusiness and value-chain development, and support cattle farming, as the water-rich land is ideal for livestock. By transforming the River Basin into an agricultural hub, Governor Abiodun is revolutionizing Ogun State’s agrarian economy, making it a key contributor to Nigeria’s food sufficiency drive.Another crucial aspect of the Governor’s visit was his engagement on the issue of perennial flooding in Isheri. While some have attributed the floods to water releases from the dam, the Managing Director of the River Basin debunked these claims, stating that the floods originate from other sources. True to his leadership style, Governor Abiodun has promised to investigate further and implement necessary measures to protect residents from environmental hazards.Governor Dapo Abiodun’s forward-thinking approach to governance continues to set Ogun State on a path of prosperity. His commitment to energy sufficiency, infrastructural rehabilitation, and agricultural revolution demonstrates true leadership, innovation, and dedication to the people of Ogun.Through this initiative, the Governor has once again distinguished himself as a pragmatic leader, one who sees opportunities in abandoned projects, creates solutions where others see challenges, and drives progress with strategic partnerships. The revival of the Ogun-Osun Hydro Power Plant is not just about electricity—it is about industrialization, economic growth, and a brighter future for Ogun State. As the Light Up Ogun Project gains momentum, residents and investors can rest assured that the best is yet to come. With Governor Abiodun at the helm, Ogun State is not just keeping pace with development—it is leading the charge.
