STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — A sweeping state grand jury investigation has shattered the veneer of campus Greek life at Pennsylvania State University, exposing an upper-level drug ring that prosecutors say used fraternity houses as distribution hubs and forced new pledges to package narcotics as a form of hazing.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday, alongside local law enforcement, announced criminal charges against 14 individuals, including 13 current or former Penn State students and the father of one of the fraternity members. According to investigators, the sophisticated, highly profitable narcotics operation ran throughout 2023 and 2024, funneling bulk quantities of cocaine from New York and Philadelphia into the student community.
A Dangerous “Indoctrination”
Authorities identified senior fraternity members Agostino Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson as the ringleaders and primary suppliers. Investigators allege the pair made frequent runs to major metropolitan hubs to stock up on wholesale quantities of cocaine, which were then brought back to State College.
The drugs were systematically cut, weighed, and packaged inside the local chapter houses of two off-campus Greek organizations: Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi. In a disturbing twist, prosecutors revealed that the manual labor of processing the drugs was frequently pushed down the chain.
”This was a coordinated and highly profitable drug-trafficking crew revolving around two senior members of the fraternities, other fraternity brothers, and pledges,” Attorney General Sunday stated during a press briefing. “In fact, according to the evidence uncovered, cutting and packaging cocaine was, for some pledges, an indoctrination into the fraternities.”
Sunday emphasized that the operation bore no resemblance to petty campus experimentation, describing it instead as a regional, upper-level trafficking syndicate that accepted payments in cash or through mainstream digital payment applications.
The Charges and Arrests
The dragnet snared a mix of organizers, alleged pushers, and secondary actors:
- The Alleged Ringleaders: Abbatiello, Robinson, Mohammed Hurabi, and Lars Zeepvat face severe felony counts including corrupt organizations, criminal conspiracy, and dealing in the proceeds of unlawful activity. Abbatiello, 24, surrendered to authorities following a brief manhunt after missing his initial arraignment and was ordered held without bail.
- Mid-Level Operators: Robert Zanolla faces felony conspiracy and communications facility use charges alongside related misdemeanors.
- The 14th Defendant: Paul Robinson, father to one of the student defendants, is accused of attempting to shield the operation by tampering with evidence and hindering the police investigation.
- Foot Soldiers: Eight other student-aged defendants are facing misdemeanor counts of drug and paraphernalia possession.
University Response and Fallout
Penn State officials expressed shock and immediate condemnation following the announcement.
”We are horrified by these serious allegations against current and former students,” said Andrea Dowhower, Penn State’s vice president for Student Affairs. “Criminal activity, including hazing, such as this has no place at our institution, and we will cooperate with law enforcement in any way we can.”
In response to the sweep, university leadership moved swiftly on the administrative front. Delta Upsilon has been slapped with an interim suspension while the Office of Student Accountability and Conflict Response initiates disciplinary hearings that could lead to permanent separation from the institution. The Sigma Chi chapter involved was already operating off-campus as an unrecognized entity outside of university oversight.
Representatives for Delta Upsilon’s international headquarters noted that local members linked to the raid have been expelled, suspended, or resigned, pledging full cooperation with ongoing university probes.
As preliminary hearings loom, the sprawling case has ignited fresh scrutiny over Greek life safety, institutional oversight, and the dark realities hidden behind fraternity house doors.
