KYIV – Any hopes for a swift resolution to the conflict in Eastern Europe were dashed on Monday as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy declared that Russia has “no intention” of ending the war. The statement came as a fragile, U.S.-mediated ceasefire collapsed under the weight of thousands of reported violations from both sides.
The three-day truce, brokered by the Trump administration to coincide with the May 9 Victory Day commemorations, expired with both Kyiv and Moscow trading accusations of artillery and drone strikes. While Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested over the weekend that the war—now in its fifth year—was nearing its conclusion, Zelenskiy used his nightly address to prepare his citizens for a renewed offensive.
”Today there was no silence on the front line,” Zelenskiy said. “Russia is not looking for peace; we are, unfortunately, preparing for new attacks. But we remain committed to the goal of a just peace.”
The diplomatic landscape remains equally fractured. Putin’s weekend proposal to negotiate new European security arrangements with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder was swiftly rebuffed by European Union foreign ministers meeting in Brussels. The ministers dismissed Schroeder, citing his long-standing ties to Russian state-owned energy firms.
On the ground, the cost of the failed truce was immediate. Reports from Zaporizhzhia and Kherson confirmed at least three civilian deaths, while Russian officials claimed a Ukrainian strike in the Belgorod region resulted in one fatality. The Ukrainian General Staff reported a staggering 180 battlefield clashes in a single 24-hour period, signaling a return to high-intensity warfare along the 1,200-km front line.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the collapse of this latest diplomatic effort underscores the deep-seated mistrust between the warring nations, casting doubt on the efficacy of recent Washington-led peace initiatives. Furthermore, ValidViewNetwork reports that military analysts expect a significant escalation in long-range missile strikes as both sides look to gain leverage before the summer heat intensifies.
As the ceasefire “strain” turns into a full-scale break, the international community remains divided on the path forward. While Moscow claims to have recorded over 23,000 violations by Ukrainian forces, Kyiv maintains that its troops are merely defending positions against persistent Russian advances. With the diplomatic doors in Brussels appearing shut to Putin’s preferred intermediaries, the prospect of a negotiated settlement remains a distant reality.
