In a significant development in Rivers State’s political landscape, candidates aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike have emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries for two key state assembly constituencies. Hon. Napoleon Ukalikpe clinched the ticket for Ahoada East Constituency II, while Mrs. Bulabari Henrietta Loolo won for Khana Constituency II, positioning them as the party’s flag-bearers for the February 21, 2026, by-elections.
These primaries, conducted between January 23 and 27 as per the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable, followed ward congresses on January 25 where delegates were elected across the affected local government areas. The wins are seen as a blow to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s faction, amid ongoing power struggles between the two erstwhile allies, highlighting Wike’s enduring influence within the APC structure despite Fubara’s recent moves to consolidate party control.
The vacancies arose from the resignation of the Ahoada East II member and the death of the Khana II representative, with INEC publishing notices on January 22. Party primaries drew keen interest, monitored by INEC officials, police, and DSS, ensuring a peaceful process that underscores APC’s grassroots mobilization ahead of campaigns starting February 8.
Political observers view this outcome as a litmus test for Rivers APC’s unity and strength, especially with Senator Magnus Abe recently affirming Wike’s leadership role in the state chapter. As the by-elections approach, both camps are expected to intensify efforts, with the results potentially reshaping assembly dynamics in the oil-rich state.
