MANHATTAN — A tragic accident claimed the life of a Westchester County woman late Monday night after she fell into an uncovered utility hole in the heart of Midtown, authorities said.
The 56-year-old victim, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification, had just stepped out of her parked Mercedes-Benz SUV around 11:20 p.m. near East 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue—a high-end shopping corridor home to flagship Cartier and Nike stores.
According to police, the woman fell approximately 10 feet into an open Con Edison vault. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene to find her unconscious and unresponsive at the bottom of the shaft.
First responders successfully extricated the woman from the subterranean hole and rushed her via ambulance to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries.
The localized tragedy has raised immediate questions regarding public safety and infrastructure maintenance in the city’s busiest commercial district. Con Edison confirmed the vault belongs to their network and announced a full-scale investigation into why the baseline safety protocols failed.

”We are deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the public has died after falling into an open manhole,” a Con Edison spokesperson said in a statement. “We are actively investigating how this occurred. Our thoughts are with the individual’s family, and safety remains our top priority.”

The precise cause of death will be determined by the city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, according to the NYPD. The investigation remains active as authorities review area surveillance footage to determine how long the hazard sat exposed to pedestrians.
