LONDON – A 61-year-old Nigerian national residing in the United Kingdom, Anthony Adewale Sobogun, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for a series of horrific sexual offenses against two children. The sentencing, handed down at the Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, concludes a case involving abuse that spanned 15 years.
Sobogun, a resident of Thistlewood Crescent, Croydon, was convicted of 17 non-recent sexual abuse charges. According to the London Metropolitan Police, his crimes—committed during the 1990s and early 2000s—included multiple counts of rape and sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13.
A “Victim-Led” Investigation
The conviction followed a painstaking investigation by Met detectives who prioritized building trust with the survivors. One victim provided harrowing testimony, revealing that Sobogun had even accompanied her to an abortion clinic after she became pregnant with his child while still a minor.
Police successfully corroborated her account by tracing decades-old medical records and counseling notes that documented the cycle of abuse. Sobogun was eventually arrested on July 2, 2025.
Detective Constable Charlotte Lockyer praised the survivors’ resilience, stating:
“The bravery of the victims in coming forward is what brought Sobogun to justice. Today’s result shows that no matter when the abuse occurred, justice can still be secured.”
In a joint statement, the survivors expressed hope that the verdict would encourage others to break the silence often found in communities where such crimes are hidden by stigma.
Rising Concerns Over Crimes Abroad
The sentencing of Sobogun adds to a string of high-profile cases involving Nigerian nationals in the UK. Just weeks ago, on March 24, 2026, 24-year-old Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu was sentenced to life imprisonment (with a minimum of 21 years and six months) at Leicester Crown Court.
Ahanonu, a drug dealer and former university student, was convicted of the random and “horrific” murder of 56-year-old Nila Patel. After crashing his car while nearly four times over the legal cannabis limit, Ahanonu brutally attacked Patel, a complete stranger, as she walked home.
These cases have sparked intense discussion within the Nigerian diaspora regarding the impact of such criminal convictions on the community’s reputation, even as authorities emphasize that these are individual acts of violence and depravity.
