ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi as the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for a final five-year tenure.
The announcement, contained in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirms that the renewal took effect on Friday, February 27, 2026. This followed the expiration of Audi’s first term, which coincided with the 2026 World Civil Defence Day celebrations held at the Corps’ National Headquarters in Abuja.
A Mandate for Reform
In granting the extension, President Tinubu tasked Dr. Audi with the urgent repositioning of the NSCDC. The President emphasized that the Corps must now play a more strategic role in Nigeria’s internal security architecture. This directive comes amid a broader federal initiative to allow the Nigeria Police Force to concentrate on its primary combat duties against banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.
Under the new mandate, the NSCDC is expected to deepen its expertise in protecting critical national assets—such as oil pipelines, power grids, and schools—while enhancing its intelligence-gathering capabilities.
A Career Built on Academic Excellence
Dr. Audi, often described as a “scholar-officer,” has maintained a career defined by a relentless pursuit of education. Born in September 1967 in Nasarawa State, he rose through the ranks after joining the NSCDC as a volunteer in 1996.
His academic portfolio is extensive, featuring:
- A PhD in Public Administration (Public Policy Analysis) from Nasarawa State University.
- A Master’s in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
- An OFR (Officer of the Federal Republic) national honor and membership in the National Institute (mni).
Legacy of the First Term
Since his initial appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021, Dr. Audi has been credited with modernizing the Corps. Key achievements cited during his “Pull-Out” ceremony on Friday included:
- The destruction of over 280 illegal refineries.
- The establishment of the Female Squad to enhance school security.
- The creation of specialized training colleges in Jos and Nasarawa.
- Significant revenue generation, including ₦4.4 billion from the regulation of private security firms.
Dr. Audi is expected to formally resume his duties on Monday, March 2, 2026, to begin his second and final chapter at the helm of the paramilitary organization
