Tinubu Mourns Fallen Heroes in Benisheikh Attack, Urges National Support for Troops

President Bola Tinubu has plunged into national mourning following a devastating terrorist assault on a military camp in Benisheikh, Borno State, that claimed the lives of at least 12 gallant soldiers, including a senior brigadier-general. The early Thursday raid by Boko Haram insurgents on the 29 Task Force Brigade base under Operation HADIN KAI underscores the relentless ferocity of Nigeria’s insurgency battle, even as military gains mount.

Defence Headquarters confirmed the attack occurred around 4 a.m., with suicide bombers and gunmen wielding rocket-propelled grenades and improvised explosive devices breaching the camp’s perimeter. Troops fought back fiercely, neutralizing several attackers and preventing a full overrun of nearby communities. Among the fallen is Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, a decorated officer who led the brigade’s defense. Over 20 others sustained injuries, with the wounded airlifted for urgent medical care.

In a heartfelt statement, Tinubu hailed the soldiers as “unforgettable heroes” whose sacrifices fortify Nigeria’s resolve against terror. “These brave men repelled the insurgents with unmatched courage, protecting innocent lives in Borno,” he said. Extending deep condolences to the bereaved families, the military, and Borno State, the President vowed unwavering government support, including enhanced equipment and welfare packages for frontline forces.

Tinubu highlighted recent successes in Operation HADIN KAI, noting sustained land and air offensives that have eliminated dozens of Boko Haram commanders and fighters in recent weeks. “This counterattack reeks of desperation from a weakening enemy,” he asserted, urging troops not to waver. “Draw strength from the nation’s gratitude. Your honour, courage, and patriotism light our path to victory.”

The President called on Nigerians and the media to rally behind the Armed Forces, decrying any glorification of such atrocities. “These soldiers are irreplaceable guardians of our peace. Let us stand united against insurgency and banditry,” he implored. He also reassured Borno Governor Babagana Zulum of federal collaboration for lasting security.
