LONDON — The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, will return to the United Kingdom next month for their first joint family trip in four years, British media outlets reported.
The couple will travel from their home in Montecito, California, accompanied by their two children, seven-year-old Prince Archie and five-year-old Princess Lilibet. The visit, confirmed by the BBC, The Telegraph, and ITV News, marks the first time the entire family will step foot on British soil together since 2022.
The primary purpose of the July 2026 trip is to attend an official event launching the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027. Prince Harry, 41, founded the international adaptive sporting competition for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans in 2014.
Thawing Ice or Strict Business?
The high-profile return comes amidst a prolonged, public estrangement between the Sussexes and the rest of the royal family. Harry and Meghan permanently relocated to North America in 2020 after stepping back from their roles as senior working royals. In subsequent televised interviews and Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare, the couple laid bare a “toxic cocktail” of intense tabloid intrusion, institutional friction, online abuse, and complex family dynamics.
While Prince Harry has made several solo trips back to his homeland over the last few years—including attending the 2022 funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and the 2023 coronation of King Charles III—he has rarely traveled with his family.
Sources close to the family indicate a potential “warming of the frost” between the Duke and his father. Reports from The Guardian suggest Harry has expressed excitement to friends about his children reconnecting with their paternal grandfather, explicitly stating his intent to use the trip to reunite with King Charles III.
However, Buckingham Palace has not confirmed whether the King will carve out time to meet with his grandchildren. The monarch has not seen Archie or Lilibet in person since June 2022, when the Sussexes attended the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
During the visit, the Duke is also scheduled to spend time with several of his remaining British patronages, including charities WellChild and Scotty’s Little Soldiers.
The Security Breakthrough
The decision to bring the children follows years of intense legal gridlock regarding the family’s safety. Prince Harry previously lost a high-stakes legal battle against the UK Home Office over the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures’ (Ravec) decision to strip him of his automatic, taxpayer-funded police protection. At the time, Harry noted that he could not envision a scenario where he could safely bring his wife and children back to the UK without adequate security.
For this upcoming July trip, the Duke has reportedly been granted a comprehensive risk assessment and assured that adequate security provisions will be implemented, clearing the logistical hurdle that kept the young prince and princess away from the UK for nearly half a decade.
