Nigeria’s Super Eagles have retained a place among the world’s top 30 national teams in the FIFA rankings issued after the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, even though the three-time African champions were not among the 48 teams that competed in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
New champions Spain reclaimed the world number one spot after beating Argentina in the final. Findings show Nigeria’s position slipped to fourth in Africa, overtaken by Egypt, whose run to the World Cup’s round of 16 lifted the Pharaohs above the Super Eagles on the continental table.
Morocco remains Africa’s highest-ranked side after reaching the quarter-finals, with Senegal second and Egypt third; Nigeria now sits fourth, still ahead of Algeria, Ivory Coast and DR Congo, all of whom played in North America this summer.
The uncomfortable arithmetic of missing out
ValidViewNetwork reports that Nigeria’s ranking, built on a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and an unbeaten Unity Cup campaign in London earlier this year, actually understates how the World Cup snub reshaped the continental picture; five of Africa’s top six ranked nations played in the tournament, and every one of them gained ground on Nigeria simply by being there.
Rankings points, unlike trophies, reward participation as much as results, which means the Super Eagles now need strong results without a global stage to earn them the visibility their rivals just received for free.
Head coach Eric Chelle’s side next turns to 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with FIFA’s next rankings update due in October.
For a team that reached its highest position in 16 years earlier in 2026, only to watch that gain erode through a tournament it never played in, qualifying convincingly for the next AFCON may matter as much to Nigeria’s global standing as any single result on the pitch.
