Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has ordered security agencies to ramp up patrols across communities and forested areas in response to a brazen New Year’s Eve attack on the Ipele Divisional Police Station in Owo Local Government Area. The directive came during an emergency meeting on Thursday with top security chiefs, underscoring the administration’s commitment to a round-the-clock security architecture, especially during festive seasons.
The incident unfolded late Wednesday night, as many residents participated in crossover church services ushering in 2026. Attackers breached the station’s perimeter and detonated an explosive device, causing structural damage but no loss of life or injuries to personnel. Ondo State Police Commissioner, CP Adebowale Lawal, confirmed that all officers emerged unscathed and swiftly rejoined patrols to thwart further threats.

Speaking at the Presidential Lodge in Akure after the high-level review session, Governor Aiyedatiwa praised the rapid response from joint security teams, including the Joint Operations Task Force, Amotekun Rangers, police, military, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). “Security operatives were already deployed statewide, including in forests. Their swift mobilization ensured the attackers could not harm anyone despite gaining access and discharging an explosive,” the governor stated.
He immediately alerted the police and army brigade commander upon receiving reports, mobilizing reinforcements to safeguard lives and property. The meeting dissected the security lapse, evaluated response efficacy, and charted strategies to prevent recurrences, with emphasis on forest enclaves often linked to criminal hideouts.
CP Lawal, who attended alongside other agency heads, dismissed viral social media claims of fatalities or church attacks during the incident. “No life was lost, and no church was targeted. These are false narratives,” he asserted, urging residents to disregard unverified information.

Investigations continue to assess damage, including potential looting from the station’s armory. Lawal cautioned against premature labeling as terrorism: “It is too early to conclude they were terrorists. Arrests and thorough probes will reveal the culprits.” He positioned Ondo as one of southern Nigeria’s safest states, calling for public calm and cooperation.
This attack aligns with a pattern of audacious strikes on security installations in Nigeria’s Southwest, amid escalating farmer-herder clashes and banditry in forested regions. Recent reports from Vanguard and Punch newspapers detail similar incidents, such as the December 2025 raid on a police outpost in neighboring Ekiti State, where assailants used improvised explosives. Analysts link these to porous borders and under-patrolled reserves, exacerbated by post-holiday vulnerabilities.

Ondo State’s Amotekun corps, launched in 2020, has bolstered local defenses, recording over 5,000 arrests since inception per state records. However, critics like the Arewa Consultative Forum have flagged intelligence gaps, urging federal intervention. No group has claimed responsibility for the Ipele assault, but security sources hint at possible links to regional militias, pending forensic analysis.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s proactive stance builds on his administration’s security blueprint, which includes community vigilance programs and tech-driven surveillance. Residents in Owo and adjoining areas report heightened patrols since the dawn incident, fostering renewed confidence.
