In a decisive move to bolster internal security and improve vehicle traceability, the Ogun State Police Command has arrested 89 motorists for flouting a nationwide directive regarding vehicle registration. The operation, which took place across various parts of the state, targeted vehicles operating without registration plates, as well as those with obscured, altered, or covered plates.
Crackdown on Regulatory Violations
The enforcement exercise, directed by the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, aims to eliminate the anonymity often exploited by criminal elements. By ensuring all vehicles are identifiable, the command intends to strengthen intelligence gathering and support more efficient criminal investigations.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the offenders are currently facing administrative and legal procedures in line with established laws. The Command has warned that this enforcement is a sustained, long-term initiative and has urged all motorists to ensure their vehicles comply with official registration requirements to avoid further sanctions.
Operational Successes Against Violent Crime
Beyond the traffic enforcement, the command recorded significant victories against armed robbery syndicates in separate operations:
- Ogere Incident: Acting on a distress call on Thursday, operatives from the Ogere Division—supported by the Ogun State So-Safe Corps, local vigilantes, and community members—foiled a robbery at Akuro Phase I, Ogere Remo. The suspects were forced to abandon two stolen motorcycles and flee. One suspect, identified as Abdulsalam Adam, was apprehended, and investigators recovered a knife, an expended cartridge, and a broken padlock from the scene.
- Ajuwon Incident: On July 2, 2026, the Ajuwon Division’s Anti-Crime Team responded to a robbery in the Baale Akinosi Area. During the operation, police intercepted the fleeing suspects, leading to the recovery of a stolen Toyota Camry and the arrest of one suspect, Israel Salako.
Call for Public Vigilance
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended his officers for their professionalism and prompt response. He emphasized that the command remains dedicated to a proactive, intelligence-led approach to policing.
Commissioner Ojajuni issued a strong advisory to the public, encouraging residents to:
- Only board commercial vehicles at designated motor parks and recognized loading points.
- Avoid patronizing unbranded or suspicious private vehicles operating as commercial transport.
- Share vehicle details and travel information with trusted family members before embarking on trips.
- Provide timely information to the police to assist in preventing criminal activities before they escalate.
The State Criminal Investigation Department at Eleweran has taken over the robbery cases, with investigations ongoing to apprehend the remaining gang members and recover outstanding stolen items.
