In a disturbing twist to international drug smuggling, a 38-year-old South African woman, Ms. Will Jessica Ann, has been taken into custody at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja for allegedly attempting to traffic 5.75 kilograms of heroin.
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted the suspect on Monday, July 6, 2026, during the clearance of passengers arriving on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha. According to agency reports, the suspect arrived in the country with her three-year-old son, intentionally using the child as a “human shield” to evade the suspicion of security officials and bypass rigorous screening protocols.
The Operation
During the initial search, the suspect attempted to deflect attention from her baggage by claiming she had no checked-in luggage. However, diligent NDLEA officers noticed discrepancies during the screening process and successfully matched luggage tags from the airport’s carousel to the claim tags attached to her passport.
Under pressure, Ms. Ann eventually confessed to owning the two bags, which contained 14 large, concealed blocks of heroin. She claimed to have traveled from Cambodia via Doha, a route that officials believe is central to a wider transnational criminal network.

International Connections
Preliminary investigations by the NDLEA suggest that the suspect is a high-level operative in an international drug syndicate. Intelligence reports link her to a Cambodia-based drug ring, allegedly managed alongside her partner, Jan Coenraad De Jager. Authorities believe the duo has been utilizing the Cambodia-South African corridor to facilitate the distribution of illicit substances across multiple continents.
This arrest comes amidst a heightened operational tempo by the NDLEA, which has recently dismantled several high-profile drug cartels and intercepted significant shipments of narcotics across various Nigerian borders. The agency continues to emphasize the use of advanced intelligence, forensic tracking, and strategic airport surveillance to disrupt global narcotics syndicates.

The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue into her connections and the extent of the syndicate’s operations.
