Former Chelsea and Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, has launched a blistering critique of Arsenal’s current form, labeling Mikel Arteta’s tactical approach as “static” and “boring” following a weekend that saw the Gunners’ Premier League lead slashed.
Arsenal’s once-comfortable grip on the title race was shaken on Saturday after a stunning 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium. The result, coupled with Manchester City’s ruthless 3-0 demolition of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, has reduced the gap at the top to just six points. With Pep Guardiola’s side holding a crucial game in hand and a head-to-head clash looming this Sunday at the Etihad, the momentum has swung firmly toward Manchester.
The ‘Death’ of Creativity
Speaking on the latest episode of the Obi One Podcast, Mikel did not hold back, suggesting that Arteta’s rigid system has stifled the natural flair of Arsenal’s most dangerous players.
“For me, they look like a team that has run out of ideas,” Mikel stated. “Arteta has coached the flair out of them. When you watch this Arsenal side, name me one player right now who truly excites you. Nobody. Absolutely zero.”
Mikel specifically highlighted Bukayo Saka and captain Martin Ødegaard, arguing that the duo—who were absent from Tuesday’s training session amid injury concerns—have become victims of over-micromanagement.
“We know what Ødegaard and Saka can do, but they feel the manager isn’t letting them express their quality. It’s very static, boring, and even pathetic to watch at times. Motivation and freedom are the keys, and right now, they have neither.”
A Historic Disaster Looms?
The former midfielder, who enjoyed a trophy-laden career at Chelsea, warned that failure to secure the trophy this season would haunt the North London club forever. Arsenal have not won the league title since the “Invincibles” campaign in 2004, and after finishing as runners-up for three consecutive seasons, the psychological pressure is reaching a breaking point.
“If they don’t win it this season, it’s probably going to be the biggest disaster in the history of the Premier League for them,” Mikel warned. “They took their foot off the gas. If they had beaten Bournemouth, it would have been a 12-point lead. Instead, they’ve let City back in.”
The Stats of a Slump
The numbers back Mikel’s concerns. While Manchester City historically excels in April—boasting an 87.5% win rate over the last six seasons—Arsenal have struggled to maintain pace. In the 2025/26 campaign alone, the Gunners have already dropped points in crucial windows, while City has started their April surge with a perfect record.

Arsenal now face a season-defining week. Before Sunday’s “winner-takes-all” showdown at the Etihad, they must navigate a Champions League quarter-final second leg against Sporting CP. With rumors of a “sack warning” circulating if the season ends trophy-less, Arteta finds himself at a crossroads: trust his rigid structure or heed Mikel’s advice and let his stars play with freedom.
