BARCELONA, Spain — The eldest son and heir of Isak Andic, the billionaire founder of global clothing giant Mango, was arrested by Spanish authorities on Tuesday in connection with his father’s fatal cliff plunge nearly 18 months ago.
Jonathan Andic, 45, who currently serves as the non-executive vice chairman of the Mango board, was taken into custody by the Mossos d’Esquadra—Catalonia’s regional police force—and brought to a courthouse in Martorell in handcuffs. Following intense questioning, a judge opened a formal case on suspicion of homicide and set bail at €1 million ($1.16 million). The bail has already been paid, allowing the younger Andic to avoid provisional detention. However, the court has ordered him to surrender his passport, remain in Spain, and make weekly judicial appearances.
From Tragic Accident to Murder Inquiry
The shocking development completely upends the initial narrative surrounding the death of 71-year-old Isak Andic in December 2024. The elder Andic, one of Spain’s wealthiest men with an estimated net worth of $4.5 billion at the time of his death, plummeted roughly 500 feet down a steep ravine while hiking near the Salnitre caves in the Montserrat mountains.
Jonathan Andic was the only witness to the incident.
At the time, authorities ruled the death an accident, believing the retail magnate had simply slipped on the treacherous terrain, and a judge officially closed the case in January 2025. However, the files were quietly reopened later that year. By October 2025, investigators shifted the probe toward a homicide inquiry after uncovering what they described as a series of circumstantial clues and notable inconsistencies in Jonathan’s testimony.
Spanish newspaper El País reported that police had previously seized Jonathan’s phone and gathered testimony from Isak Andic’s partner, professional golfer Estefania Knuth. Knuth reportedly described a tense relationship between the father and son, largely stemming from a corporate power struggle. Isak had handed Jonathan significant operational control of Mango in 2014, only to claw back power a year later following business difficulties. The operational reins were ultimately given to CEO Toni Ruiz in 2020.
Family Maincaps Innocence
Despite the severe allegations, the Andic family and legal representatives are fiercely defending Jonathan. In a statement released via Reuters and Spanish media, a family spokesperson emphasized total confidence in his innocence.
”The cooperation has been and will remain total. There is no, and will be no, legitimate incriminating evidence against him. The course of the investigation will demonstrate this.”
The family also called for the public and media to respect the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence while the judicial process unfolds.
A Fashion Empire in Flux
The legal drama casts a long shadow over one of Europe’s most successful retail success stories. Born in Istanbul, Isak Andic immigrated to Catalonia in the late 1960s, famously starting his career selling T-shirts out of street markets. He and his brother, Nahman, opened the first Mango boutique on Barcelona’s Paseo de Gracia in 1984.
Over the next four decades, Andic built Mango into a global fast-fashion behemoth second only to Zara’s parent company, Inditex, within Spain. Today, the brand boasts around 2,900 stores across 120 markets worldwide. Despite the family tragedy, Mango has continued to thrive financially, posting a record-breaking revenue of nearly €3.8 billion ($4.4 billion) for the past fiscal year—an 11% increase from the year prior.
Jonathan and his two sisters own 95% of the company, with CEO Toni Ruiz holding the remaining 5%. While Jonathan gave up his executive role heading the Mango Man division last year, his continued presence on the board means the ongoing murder investigation will undoubtedly keep the corporate world watching Barcelona closely.
