IBADAN – In a proactive move to mitigate the mounting economic pressure caused by the recent surge in petroleum prices, the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced a mandatory N10,000 monthly salary top-up for all civil servants in the state.
The Governor made this disclosure on Monday during a high-profile event in Ibadan, the state capital. He clarified that the financial intervention is designed as a “petrol and transportation support” package to help workers navigate the rising cost of living.
According to the Governor, the payment cycle for the new allowance is set to commence in April 2026. While the initial approval covers a three-month window, Governor Makinde hinted at the possibility of an extension depending on the economic climate and fuel price stability.
”I’m happy to announce that all workers in Oyo State and the local government, starting from April, will be given N10,000 in addition to their monthly salary,” the Governor stated. Emphasizing the equity of the distribution, he added, “It is a flat rate. All workers, everybody.”
Beyond the Civil Service
In a move that signals a broader welfare strategy, the Governor indicated that the state is working on a framework to ensure that residents who are not currently in the state’s employ also feel the impact of the government’s intervention.
”Those who are not working with the Oyo State government may also benefit from it,” Makinde noted. “We will handle it properly to ensure it is all-inclusive.”
The announcement comes amid reports of petrol prices fluctuating between N1,200 and N1,300 per litre across the country, with analysts warning of further hikes. The Oyo State government has previously implemented several “SAfER” (Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery) packages, including the deployment of “Omituntun” free buses and health insurance for vulnerable households.
As he moves toward the conclusion of his administration, Makinde emphasized that his focus remains on economic expansion and institutional stability. This latest wage adjustment follows the state’s recent implementation of the N80,000 minimum wage—a figure that remains one of the highest in the federation.
State labor leaders have lauded the development, describing the Governor as “worker-friendly” for his consistency in addressing the “trust deficit” often seen between government and organized labor.
