Lagos State Compensates Oworo Residents in Urban Renewal Drive

The Lagos State Government recently presented cheques to 79 residents of the Oworo community whose properties were removed as part of the state’s urban regeneration initiative. The presentation ceremony took place at the Palace of Oloworo Kingdom and was overseen by the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), under the Office of Urban Development.

LASURA’s General Manager, Tpl. Animashaun Oladimeji Saheed, highlighted that the government had earlier informed the affected residents and carried out detailed enumeration and verification to determine appropriate compensation amounts. He affirmed that the payments fulfilled the government’s promise to support those impacted by the property removals.

The compensation varied according to the property type, with payments ranging from several million naira for permanent structures to smaller amounts for makeshift kiosks and shanties. This approach ensured fairness and recognized the differences in property values. Saheed reiterated the government’s commitment to its urban development agenda, emphasizing ongoing engagement with residents and stakeholders to safeguard citizens’ rights.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the compensation, describing it as a relief amid the urban renewal process, and pledged their cooperation with the government to realize the vision of a modernized, well-planned community.

This initiative forms part of a broader Lagos State plan to transform Oworo, historically marked for regeneration for over five years, into a safer and more livable area with improved infrastructure such as housing, drainage, potable water, and road access. The government assures that no resident will suffer unjustly as urban renewal efforts continue under the administration’s policy of development with dignity.
