Tinubu Jets to Makkah for Umrah, Seeks Divine Guidance for Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departs Abuja today for Makkah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, the lesser Islamic pilgrimage, during which he will offer prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability and progress.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the trip in a statement on Wednesday. The visit, he said, offers the President an opportunity for spiritual reflection and devotion while seeking Allah’s guidance and blessings for the country and its people.

Umrah, which can be performed at any time of the year unlike the annual Hajj, involves specific religious rites centred on the Holy City. While in Makkah, Tinubu will undertake these rites as part of the spiritual exercise. The Presidency stated that he is expected to return to Nigeria next week after completing the pilgrimage.

Before boarding his flight, the President will commission equipment acquired by the Nigerian Air Force for its operations. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The Air Force has been expanding its fleet in recent months as part of ongoing modernisation efforts. It recently took delivery of additional helicopters, including AW-109 Trekker models and H-125 platforms, to enhance operational capacity in support of security operations across the country. The specific equipment to be commissioned today was not detailed in the statement.

This trip comes weeks after Tinubu returned from a working vacation in Europe that began in late August. It also continues a personal pattern of performing Umrah; the President has undertaken the lesser pilgrimage on previous occasions, including as a candidate and earlier in his tenure, often describing such visits as moments for spiritual renewal and national intercession.

The departure underscores the Presidency’s framing of the journey as both a personal act of faith and a public appeal for divine intervention amid Nigeria’s security and developmental challenges. Tinubu is expected back in the country next week.
