THE GULF — Tensions in the Middle East reached a fever pitch on Wednesday as Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) gunboats opened fire on and seized commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, directly defying a ceasefire extension announced just hours earlier by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The maritime violence marks a significant escalation in the ongoing standoff over the world’s most vital oil transit point, threatening to derail high-stakes peace talks scheduled to take place in Washington.
Bridge Blasted in Unprovoked Strike
The British maritime monitor, UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), reported that at least three vessels were targeted in a series of coordinated strikes. In the most severe incident, a Liberian-flagged container ship, the Epaminondas, was intercepted 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman.
According to the ship’s master, a fast-attack IRGC boat approached without making radio contact and opened fire with heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). The assault caused extensive damage to the vessel’s bridge—the ship’s command center—though maritime agencies confirmed there were no casualties among the crew.
”The ship had been informed it had permission to transit the Strait,” a spokesperson for security firm Vanguard Tech stated, contradicting Iranian claims that the vessel had ignored military warnings.
Seizures and Conflicting Reports
As the gunfire echoed across the strait, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported that the IRGC had successfully seized two “violating” ships: the Panama-flagged MSC Francesca and the Liberia-flagged Epaminondas. Tehran claims the vessels were directed to the Iranian coast for “breaching maritime regulations.”
The IRGC issued a defiant statement marking its anniversary, warning of “crushing blows beyond imagination” if aggression against Iranian interests continues. The force maintains that the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian oil remains the primary driver of the conflict.
The Trump Ceasefire in Jeopardy
The attacks come at a delicate moment for the White House. On Tuesday, President Trump announced an indefinite extension of the truce with Iran to allow for a “unified proposal” for a wider peace deal.
”It’s possible!” Trump reportedly texted journalists when asked if a second round of direct talks could still proceed this week despite the maritime skirmishes. However, critics in Washington point to the surge of thousands of additional U.S. forces to the region as evidence that the administration is preparing for the possibility of the ceasefire’s total collapse.
Global Market Reaction
The brazen daylight attacks sent immediate shockwaves through global energy markets. Oil prices jumped more than 3% on Wednesday afternoon as traders weighed the risk of a prolonged closure of the Strait, through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil consumption passes daily.
As of Thursday morning, the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group remains on high alert in the North Arabian Sea. International maritime agencies have advised all commercial traffic to exercise “extreme caution” and report any suspicious activity immediately as the shadow of open conflict looms over the Gulf.
