A severe thunderstorm struck Obidi, Agwa, and parts of Oguta Local Government Area in Imo State on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, killing three people and leaving four others critically injured. The incident has sparked tension in the communities, with residents describing the storm as mysterious due to the absence of heavy rainfall despite its destructive force.

Elder confirms casualties
Village elder Nze Ike confirmed the incident to Punch, stating that four survivors are hospitalized. He explained that the thunderstorm occurred during light rain, catching residents off guard: “The thunder struck a large tree where people often sought shade, affecting nearly everyone sheltering beneath it. Three died instantly, while four are still receiving treatment.”
Community links tragedy to past events
Residents expressed fears of supernatural causes, citing a similar incident decades ago when lightning struck the Zii tree, killing multiple people. Some linked the latest tragedy to the alleged killing of a traditional ruler in the community’s recent history, describing it as potential “sacrilege.”
Leaders call for action
Community leaders urged authorities to implement preventive measures, combining spiritual and practical safety protocols. Agwa community leader Collins Ughalla called the event “a major tragedy,” noting the last comparable incident occurred in the 1980s. Many parents have reportedly advised their children to postpone visits home until tensions subside.
