Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his UK counterpart John Healey issued stark warnings at the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in Berlin, stating that the escalating conflict in the Middle East—particularly involving Iran—is diverting critical attention and resources from Ukraine’s defense against Russia. Pistorius emphasized that Russia is “gaining from the ongoing situations in the Middle East,” with rising oil prices directly filling Moscow’s “war coffers” amid disruptions like those in the Strait of Hormuz.
The ministers called for swift de-escalation in the Persian Gulf to refocus international efforts on Ukraine, where relations have evolved into a “strategic partnership” four years into Russia’s invasion. Both nations pledged enhanced military support: Germany will supply Patriot missile launchers and IRIS-T air defense systems, plus finance deep-strike drones produced in Ukraine, while the UK commits drones and in-country initiatives backed by global funding. Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykola Oleshchuk and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte attended, with Rutte praising Ukraine’s resilience and the new commitments to sustain equipment flows.
Analysts note that oil export prices for Russia have surged from below $40 per barrel in December to around $62, fueled by Iran war fears and Hormuz disruptions affecting 20% of global oil transit, enabling Moscow to sustain its Ukraine offensive despite economic strains like tax hikes and borrowing. This windfall underscores broader concerns that Middle East turmoil benefits Putin by easing sanctions temporarily and drawing Western resources away from Kyiv. The Berlin talks highlight allied determination to counter these dynamics amid ongoing global tensions.
