Paris — Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) nations and the European Union issued a high-stakes joint statement on Saturday, demanding an “immediate and unconditional” cessation of all attacks by the Iranian regime and its regional proxies.
The plea for de-escalation comes three weeks into a devastating region-wide conflict sparked by the February 28 U.S.-Israeli bombardment of Iran, codenamed “Operation Epic Fury.” The G7 envoys—representing Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—expressed “unwavering support” for regional partners facing what they termed “unjustifiable attacks” on civilian and energy infrastructure.
”We support the right of the countries attacked by Iran or its proxies to defend their territories and protect their citizens,” the statement read, specifically citing recent strikes against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, and Iraq.
The conflict has severely disrupted global markets, with Iran retaliating by attempting to block the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG). While U.S. officials claim Iran’s maritime threat is “degraded,” the G7 signaled readiness to implement ship-escorting protocols to stabilize energy supplies.
Despite the firm diplomatic stance, the humanitarian toll continues to mount. Reports indicate the death toll in Iran has exceeded 1,400, including over 200 children, while at least 13 U.S. service members and dozens of Israeli civilians have been killed since the initial February strikes that reportedly claimed the life of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
