UNITED STATES — The American football community is in mourning following the death of former NFL offensive guard and Super Bowl champion Jordan Devey at the age of 38.
Devey, whose professional career spanned seven seasons and five different franchises, died by suicide, according to a family-backed fundraising page. His passing coincided with what would have been his 15th wedding anniversary with his wife, Linsey.
In a moving social media tribute, Linsey Devey remembered her husband as a pillar for their family. “You were our hero and our hearts ache in your absence,” she wrote. “We love you. We miss you. And as you said in your last words to me, ‘we’ll talk soon.'” The couple shared four children.
A gritty competitor whose path to the pros defied conventional odds, Devey went undrafted out of the University of Memphis before grinding his way onto the active roster of the New England Patriots. He earned a Super Bowl ring during the Patriots’ XLIX championship run in the 2014 season. Over his career, he also made stops with the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, and Buffalo Bills, totaling 44 regular-season appearances and 21 starts.
Following his retirement from the league in 2021, Devey dedicated his time to coaching youth and high school athletes, most recently serving as an assistant coach at Eagle High School in Idaho. Those who worked with him praised his commitment to mentoring the next generation.
In the wake of his death, Devey’s family has brought renewed attention to the hidden long-term physical tolls of contact sports. Speaking with local media, his mother, Leslie, shared the family’s belief that he may have been suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the degenerative brain disorder linked to repeated head impacts.
