Actor Faizon Love, a familiar face from comedy hits like Elf, Couples Retreat, and Mr. Bones, has been released from custody in Florida following a cascading legal battle over massive unpaid child support.
The 58-year-old comedian was freed on Friday, June 19, after spending three days in a Tampa jail on two counts of contempt of court. His Florida stint followed a 16-day incarceration in California, from which he was extradited to face the music in the Sunshine State.
From Hollywood to Homelessness
The legal saga stems from a reopened paternity case spearheaded by Love’s former partner, Tiffany Lee. Lee alleges that the actor has willfully evaded his parental financial duties for years, racking up an estimated $250,000 in back child support. In a tense courtroom confrontation, Lee testified that Love explicitly vowed she “wasn’t going to get a dime” and threatened to stop working altogether to circumvent the payments.
However, Love’s legal team painted a vastly different, stark picture of the actor’s current reality, claiming his absence of payments is rooted in genuine destitution rather than malice.
”He was homeless. He lived in his car,” his attorney, Glen Lansky, told the court. “That’s how the mighty have fallen.”
Surviving on ‘Elf’ Royalties
Appearing before the judge in a wheelchair, Love testified that his financial world had completely collapsed, leaving him entirely unable to meet the court-mandated $2,500 monthly obligations.
According to court documents, Love’s maximum annual income over the last five years peaked at a meager $13,000, with his listed income for 2025 plummeting to zero. The actor revealed that his primary lifeline is the annual royalty check he receives for his role as the cynical store manager in the 2003 Christmas classic Elf—an amount totaling just $10,000 a year.
Lansky clarified that while Love’s financial straits remain severe, he is no longer living in his vehicle and is currently residing with a friend in California.
The Clock is Ticking
While Love is temporarily free, his legal woes are far from over. The presiding judge has handed down a strict deadline of July 1 for the actor to submit exhaustive financial records proving his inability to pay.
Lansky expressed confidence moving forward, noting that the defense plans to formally petition the court for a drastic downward modification of the existing child support order to match Love’s current economic reality.
