ENUGU – The Enugu State Government has vowed to pursue the “full weight of the law” following the arrest of a woman, Mrs. Ogechi John, for the alleged murder of her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Amanda John.
The suspect, an indigene of Ikwo Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, was taken into custody by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force on Monday morning. The arrest follows a harrowing incident on Sunday afternoon at the family’s residence in Nchatancha, Emene, within the Enugu East Local Government Area.
According to official statements released via Governor Peter Mbah’s media channels, the young victim reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained during a severe beating. Neighbors who witnessed the aftermath claimed the incident occurred around 3:00 pm on Sunday. Heartbreaking accounts from residents suggest that Amanda had been a frequent victim of “ruthless maltreatment” prior to the fatal encounter.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, emphasized the state’s uncompromising stance on child protection.
”The Governor Peter Mbah administration has zero tolerance for any form of child abuse, let alone child homicide,” Enih stated. “We swung into action immediately to ensure the suspect was arrested, and we will monitor the legal process to ensure justice is served swiftly.”
The Commissioner further assured the public that the Ministry would work closely with law enforcement to facilitate a thorough investigation. “Nobody should take another’s life, and certainly not the life of a child in Enugu State. We condemn this in totality,” she added.
While the specific police division handling the case has not been disclosed, the state government has reiterated its warning that any individual found guilty of violence against minors will face rigorous prosecution. Mrs. John remains in police custody as investigations continue.
