Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has made a heartfelt appeal to nursing students in the state, urging them not to leave after graduation. This plea aims to curb the brain drain in the healthcare sector, a trend commonly referred to as the “japa syndrome.” Mbah emphasized the significant resources invested in training these students and encouraged them to give back to the community by staying and contributing to the state’s healthcare system.
The governor’s appeal was made during the 2024/2025 Maiden Matriculation Ceremony of the Nursing College, Enugu, where 240 students matriculated across two campuses. Mbah highlighted improvements in service conditions and infrastructure to retain skilled professionals. However, public reactions suggest that better pay and working conditions are crucial for retaining these professionals.
