ILORIN – The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially distanced its recent anti-fraud activities from the protests staged by students of the Kwara State Polytechnic.
In a statement released following a tactical operation on Wednesday, March 24, 2026, the Commission clarified that its personnel conducted a targeted strike on two buildings in the Agbede Community—an area off-campus—following intelligence regarding suspected cybercrime activities.
Details of the Operation
The sting operation resulted in the apprehension of 30 suspects allegedly involved in internet-related fraud. Upon profiling, it was discovered that six of the detainees are students of the Kwara State Polytechnic. According to the EFCC, evidence recovered during the raid includes:
1.Eight high-end vehicles suspected to be proceeds of illicit activities.
2.Several laptops and mobile devices used for fraudulent transactions.
Setting the Record Straight
Addressing rumors and viral videos suggesting that the EFCC had invaded the institution’s campus, the Zonal Directorate emphasized that the operation was entirely independent of the Polytechnic’s premises.
”The sting operation was not remotely connected to the Polytechnic,” the statement read. “No entrance was made into the premises of the institution, and there was no disruption of any academic or administrative activity.”
The Commission further described as “untenable” and “contrived” any attempts to link the lawful exercise of its mandate to the unrest within the student body. The EFCC maintained that any footage circulating on social media misrepresenting the events is an outright fabrication designed to mislead the public.
Commitment to Professionalism
While acknowledging the restoration of calm reported by the Polytechnic’s management, the EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and integrity. The agency reminded the public that channels for reporting unethical conduct by its staff remain open, ensuring that the Commission continues to act in the best interest of all Nigerians.
The Polytechnic authorities have since confirmed that examinations are proceeding as scheduled and urged commuters and residents to go about their normal business without fear.
