LAGOS — Operatives of the Lagos Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have apprehended a 55-year-old man, John Anoruo, for allegedly masquerading as a legal practitioner and using a forged Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seal to authenticate legal documents.
The suspect, who reportedly operates an unlicensed legal and educational consultancy firm in the Ikorodu axis of Lagos State, was taken into custody on Monday, April 20, 2026, following a series of discrepancies uncovered by the anti-graft agency.
The Paper Trail
Anoruo’s legal charade began to crumble when he submitted a formal petition to the EFCC on September 22, 2025. Acting as “counsel” for several clients, he filed a complaint against the management of Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited.
Suspicions were further ignited on March 5, 2026, when Anoruo submitted a “Letter of Withdrawal” regarding the same case. Forensic scrutiny of the documents by EFCC investigators revealed that the NBA seal affixed to both the petition and the withdrawal letter was a sophisticated forgery.
A Law Degree Without a License
Under interrogation, Anoruo reportedly made a startling confession. While he claimed to have earned a Law degree through evening classes at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), in 2018, he admitted that he never attended the Nigerian Law School nor was he ever called to the Bar.
Without the mandatory Law School certification and the “Call to Bar” certificate, an individual is legally prohibited from practicing law or using the professional seal of the NBA in Nigeria. Anoruo further confessed that he procured the forged seal from an undisclosed business center in Lagos to give his consultancy a veneer of professional legitimacy.
NBA Crackdown on Imposters
This arrest comes amid a heightened crackdown by the Nigerian Bar Association on “fake lawyers” who exploit unsuspecting members of the public. The NBA has repeatedly warned that the use of digitalized, high-security seals is intended to weed out charlatans, yet the black market for forged professional stamps remains a challenge for law enforcement.
The EFCC confirmed that investigations are still ongoing to determine the extent of Anoruo’s legal dealings and to identify his accomplices in the forgery ring.
”The suspect has provided useful information and will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded,” an EFCC spokesperson stated.
