Edo State Police Command has arrested 43-year-old Amadin Williams, the chief suspect in the shocking machete murder of his childhood friend, Eghosa Osas, during a joyous Christmas housewarming party in Oben community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.
The gruesome incident unfolded on December 25, 2025, as Osas, also 43 and a successful returnee from abroad, celebrated the festive season with family and friends. Police spokesperson SP Eno Ikoedem confirmed the arrest on December 28, noting that Williams fled the scene but was swiftly tracked to a hideout in Benin City. “The report of the murder of Eghosa is true, and the suspect, Amadin Williams, believed to be his childhood friend, is in custody,” Ikoedem stated. “Investigation is ongoing, and he will be charged to court as soon as it concludes.”
Chilling Account of the Attack
Eyewitness accounts and police reports paint a harrowing picture. Osas had briefly stepped away from the lively party to relieve himself when Williams allegedly ambushed him, delivering a fatal slash to the neck with a machete. The attack was so sudden and brutal that partygoers only discovered the body moments later, sending shockwaves through the community.
Sources familiar with the probe told our correspondent that the motive remains shrouded in mystery, despite the men’s long shared history as childhood friends from Oben. No public records of prior disputes have emerged, amplifying the sense of betrayal. Williams’ panicked flight fueled local suspicions, prompting a rapid police manhunt that ended with his detention. Authorities have recovered the suspected murder weapon, which is undergoing forensic analysis at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Benin.
Rising Tide of Violence in Edo
This killing comes against a backdrop of escalating insecurity in Edo State, where machete-wielding attacks have become alarmingly common. Recent reports from Vanguard and Punch highlight a surge in cult-related clashes and unresolved grudges in Benin metropolis and surrounding areas. While police have dismissed ritual motives in this case, the incident underscores broader concerns over communal trust during festive periods.
Oben residents, still reeling, described Osas as a philanthropist who returned from overseas to invest in local development, including property and community projects. His elder brother, who reported the crime, expressed devastation over the loss. Community leaders and a local vigilante coordinator condemned the act, with the latter stating, “Such betrayals erode our festive spirit and the bonds of friendship we hold dear. We demand swift justice.”
Police Vow Thorough Probe
As of December 29, 2025, Williams remains in SCID custody. Edo Police assure a meticulous investigation, including witness interviews and forensic tests, to uncover any hidden animosities. No further suspects are currently in custody, but officials urge residents with information to come forward.
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of peace amid Edo’s security challenges. Families across the state now grapple with grief, calling for stronger preventive measures.
