BENIN CITY – The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) has issued a final call to all residents, professionals, and business owners to file their annual tax returns before the statutory deadline of March 31, 2026.
In a public notice released on Sunday, the Executive Chairman of the EIRS, John Osirenimhe Odior, emphasized that compliance is no longer a matter of discretion but a “non-optional, statutory, and civic obligation.” The directive comes as the state tightens its fiscal net under the newly implemented Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025.
Who Must File?
The mandate covers a wide array of the state’s economic participants. Beyond traditional corporate entities, the EIRS explicitly listed:
- Employees and self-employed professionals.
- Entrepreneurs and small business owners.
- Online traders and content creators.
- Artisans and tradespeople within the informal sector.
Legal Framework and Penalties
Mr. Odior noted that the requirement is firmly rooted in Section 24 (f) of the 1999 Constitution and Section 13 of the NTAA 2025. Under these revised laws, the penalties for non-compliance have become more stringent. Failure to file, late submission, or providing misleading information can result in administrative fines starting from ₦100,000, with additional daily or monthly accruals for continued default.
Digital Transition
To simplify the process, the EIRS has fully transitioned to an electronic filing system. Taxpayers are no longer required to visit physical offices for the initial submission.
”We have streamlined the process to allow taxpayers to fulfill their obligations from the comfort of their homes or offices,” Odior stated.
Steps for Compliance:
- Download: Visit www.eirs.gov.ng to obtain Tax Form A.
- Documentation: Attach a completed self-assessment form, evidence of all income sources from the preceding year (2025), tax computations, and a valid Taxpayer ID.
- Financials: For business owners, audited financial statements are mandatory.
- Submission: Completed and signed documents should be emailed directly to e-filing@eirs.gov.ng.
The EIRS Chairman concluded by reminding residents that tax compliance is the “engine room” for the state’s development projects, urging anyone with technical difficulties to contact their dedicated helpline at 0813 097 0146.
