Making Lemonade: The Two-Decade Legacy of East Kent’s Neonatal Champion
ASHFORD — In the high-stakes, quiet intensity of the neonatal unit at William Harvey Hospital (WHH), twenty years can be measured in thousands of tiny heartbeats and the grateful smiles of families. This month, East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is celebrating a major milestone for one of its most dedicated clinicians: Dr. Olubunmi Akinnawonu.
Dr. Akinnawonu, a Specialist in Neonatology, has officially marked two decades of service with the Trust. Her journey began in 2006 when she joined as a senior house officer. By 2009, she had found her calling as a specialty doctor, dedicating her career to the care of the hospital’s smallest and most vulnerable patients.
A Passion for the Next Generation
While her clinical expertise is centered on the neonatal unit, her influence stretches far beyond the ward. Since 2018, Dr. Akinnawonu has served as an honorary senior lecturer at King’s College London. In this role, she translates the same patience and precision she uses at the bedside into the classroom, molding the doctors of tomorrow.
Her commitment to education reached new heights in 2019 when she became the Block Lead for Child Health for King’s College Hospital. Most recently, in 2025, her leadership was further recognized with her appointment as the Trust’s Locally Employed Doctor (LED) Tutor.
Leading with Empathy
Dr. Akinnawonu’s impact on the Trust is not limited to medicine. She is a fierce advocate for her colleagues and the wider community, having served in several high-profile leadership roles:
- BAME Network Chair (2020–2024): Championing diversity and inclusion during some of the NHS’s most challenging years.
- Staff Governor: Representing the voice of healthcare workers at the highest level of Trust governance.
- LNC Member: Serving on the Local Negotiating Committee to ensure fair standards for her peers.
The ‘Lemonade’ Philosophy
Despite the inevitable pressures of a 20-year career in the NHS, Dr. Akinnawonu is known among her team for her infectious optimism. Her colleagues frequently cite her personal motto: “When life serves you lemons, make lemonade out of it.”
”One theme is unmistakable throughout her career,” her team said in a statement. “She has dedicated her life to caring for our patients while simultaneously uplifting colleagues and students. Her path hasn’t always been straightforward, but she meets every challenge with a smile.”
Whether she is achieving distinctions in postgraduate diplomas or guiding a medical student through their first pediatric rotation, Dr. Akinnawonu remains a cornerstone of the East Kent medical community.
As she enters her third decade of service, the Trust and the families of East Kent stand together in saying: Congratulations, Dr. Akinnawonu.
