The Democratic Republic of Congo have booked their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, edging Jamaica 1‑0 in an inter‑continental playoff match played in Guadalajara, Mexico, to become the continent’s 10th representative at the expanded showpiece tournament.
Narrow win in extra time
The tie remained goalless through normal time at Estadio Akron before DR Congo’s central defender, Axel Tuanzebe, pounced on a corner kick in the 100th minute to fire the Leopards into the lead. The Caribbean side piled on pressure in the closing stages, including several minutes of added time, but the Congolese defence held firm to preserve the 1‑0 advantage and secure qualification.
Historic return after 52 years
The victory marks DR Congo’s first World Cup appearance since 1974, when the team competed as Zaire in West Germany. After more than half a century of near misses and eliminations, the qualification has sparked scenes of celebration across the Congolese football community, with fans hailing the achievement as a long‑overdue reward for the perseverance of both players and the national setup.
Tough playoff run
Before facing Jamaica, DR Congo had already negotiated a grueling second‑round path in the CAF qualifiers, finishing as runners‑up in a group headed by Senegal, and then advancing through a series of high‑stakes fixtures that included challenging ties against Cameroon and Nigeria. Their progression through those rounds earned them a spot in the inter‑continental playoff bracket, where they ultimately overcame the Caribbean champions to secure their World Cup berth.
Africa’s 10‑team World Cup contingent
With DR Congo’s qualification confirmed, the African contingent at the 48‑team 2026 World Cup is complete. The other nine nations are Senegal, Morocco, Ghana, South Africa, Algeria, Ivory Coast, Cape Verde, Tunisia, and Egypt, making this the largest African representation in the tournament’s history. The draw for the new 12‑group structure is expected to be held later this year, with the Leopards hoping to avoid the strongest pots and secure a favourable path in the group stage.

Tension,tactics, and hope
The DR Congo–Jamaica playoff was played at a high intensity, with neither side willing to concede space in the early exchanges. The Africans gradually assumed control, using their compact midfield and quick transitions down the flanks to create chances, while Jamaica sought to exploit set‑pieces and counter‑attacks. The solitary goal, however, proved decisive, and the result leaves the Leopards free to focus on preparations for the main tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada, where they will aim to turn a historic qualification into a credible performance on the global stage.
