FAIRFIELD, Calif. — A celebratory night turned into a tragedy on Wednesday evening when gunfire erupted in a school parking lot, leaving an 18-year-old dead and three others wounded—including an 11-year-old child—following a high school graduation ceremony.
The shooting occurred around 7:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Fairfield High School, located roughly 50 miles northeast of San Francisco. The campus was hosting the graduation ceremony for Sem Yeto High School, an alternative education institution in the district.
According to Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Belyea, officers rushed to the scene immediately following reports of gunfire as families and graduates were exiting the venue.
”It’s a very scary incident when something like this does happen, especially during the end of a school event,” Belyea said during a press conference. “So, obviously, we just want everyone to be safe.”
The gunfire struck four people. Authorities confirmed that an 18-year-old victim succumbed to injuries sustained during the shooting and was pronounced dead. The three surviving victims—aged 11, 20, and 25—were rushed to local hospitals. Their current medical conditions have not yet been released by officials.
As investigators combed the parking lot for evidence, police emphasized that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident.

“This is a very active incident,” Belyea stated, noting that an intensive investigation is underway. However, she assured the public that authorities currently “have no information to suggest there is any ongoing threat to the community.”
No information regarding a suspect or a motive has been released, and it remains unclear if the victims were targeted or if they were affiliated with the graduating class. Police are urging anyone with video footage or information about the incident to come forward.
