NEW YORK – A high-stakes immigration enforcement operation in Brooklyn spiraled into a violent street confrontation late Saturday night, as a mob of approximately 200 protesters attempted to prevent federal agents from transporting a Nigerian national in custody.
The suspect, identified as Chidozie Wilson Okeke, 67, allegedly overstayed a tourist visa that expired in February 2024. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Okeke was the target of a “targeted enforcement operation” due to previous arrests involving assault and criminal drug possession. Validviewnetwork reports that the situation intensified when Okeke allegedly weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to strike federal officers before physically resisting arrest.
Hospital Standoff and Civil Unrest
Following his apprehension, Okeke requested medical attention and was transported to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Bushwick. Federal officials stated that while at the facility, the suspect remained combative, reportedly throwing himself to the floor and screaming in an attempt to obstruct the process.
As word of the detention spread via social media, a large crowd of activists and “out-of-state agitators” descended upon the hospital, effectively lay siege to the emergency exits. Validviewnetwork reports that the New York Police Department (NYPD) was eventually forced to intervene to restore order as the mob began damaging ICE vehicles and assaulting federal agents.

Legal and Political Fallout
The confrontation has sparked a fierce debate regarding New York City’s “sanctuary city” policies. While DHS officials condemned the mob’s actions as felonious, local activists and some city officials questioned the level of coordination between the NYPD and ICE.
- Arrests: Nine demonstrators were taken into custody, facing charges ranging from criminal mischief to obstructing governmental administration.
- Injuries: Several ICE officers sustained minor injuries during the melee.
- Duration: The standoff lasted until approximately 2:45 a.m. Sunday, when law enforcement finally managed to whisk Okeke away from the scene.
DHS representatives maintained that their officers utilized “the minimum amount of force necessary” to manage both a non-compliant detainee and a hostile crowd. Okeke remains in federal custody pending deportation proceedings.
