Tension has gripped Oko Irese community in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State following the reported abduction of a chieftain of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Comrade Bayo Fabiyi, and two other individuals during a mission to secure the release of a kidnapped victim.
The incident, which has sparked concern among residents and local stakeholders, reportedly occurred while the victims were travelling to deliver ransom and other items demanded by kidnappers.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Comrade Fabiyi, a driver, and another associate were allegedly intercepted by armed men while conveying about ₦30 million, five motorcycles, and three bags of rice intended to facilitate the release of a previously abducted victim.
According to sources familiar with the development, the ransom package was part of efforts to secure the freedom of a resident who had earlier been kidnapped within the community.
A source disclosed that the victim they sought to rescue had allegedly been killed before the ransom team arrived, a development that was reportedly unknown to those undertaking the mission.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the abductors allegedly instructed the team to proceed into a forested area along a route connecting Kwara and Kogi states, where they were reportedly ambushed and taken captive at gunpoint.
Sources further claimed that Comrade Fabiyi had sought consultation before embarking on the journey and was allegedly advised against making the trip due to perceived dangers.
Despite the warning, the journey reportedly went ahead as planned.
Another source stated that the incident was not immediately reported to security agencies, raising concerns about the delay in official intervention and rescue efforts.
When contacted, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, said the command had not received any formal report regarding the alleged abduction of an OPC member at the time of inquiry, ValidViewNetwork reports.
The development has heightened anxiety within the affected community, especially amid growing concerns over insecurity and kidnapping activities across parts of the North Central region. As families and residents await official confirmation and possible rescue efforts, many are hoping for the safe return of the abducted individuals while security agencies intensify measures to tackle the menace of kidnapping and violent crime.
