MAIDUGURI — Security operatives in Borno State have dealt a major blow to cross-border drug trafficking networks after intercepting a massive haul of prohibited substances destined for international markets.
Operatives attached to the Borno State Police Command’s X-Squad intercepted 55 large sacks filled with 60ml bottles of a potent illicit substance locally referred to as “Gumm.”
The Interception along Baga Road
The breakthrough occurred along the Baga Road-Bypass corridor in Maiduguri. Acting on actionable intelligence, the specialized police unit flagged down an Isuzu Bedford pick-up vehicle. A meticulous search of the vehicle uncovered the hidden cargo of contraband.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the arrest of the vehicle’s driver, 51-year-old Babagana Modu.
”During interrogation, the suspect confessed that he was hired strictly to transport the massive consignment to its destination,” Daso stated.
Sights on International Borders
Preliminary investigations by the command reveal that the syndicate intended to move the shipment through the Ngamboru Ngala Local Government Area—a strategic border hub—before smuggling the contraband across Nigeria’s international borders.
The Borno State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Naziru Abdulmajid, reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for drug trafficking, noting that illicit substances heavily fuel regional crime and instability.
While the driver remains in custody, police tactical teams are actively pursuing fleeing associates linked to the smuggling ring. The command has urged border communities and the general public to remain vigilant and provide timely intelligence to help block criminal transit routes.
