BELFAST — British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has condemned a “sickening” and “abhorrent” knife attack in north Belfast that has left a man in his 40s fighting for his life in hospital.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has declared a “critical incident” following the brutal assault, which occurred shortly after 10:30 pm on Monday night outside an apartment complex near the busy Antrim Road.
A suspect in his 30s, identified by police as a Sudanese national who had legally been granted leave to remain in the UK after traveling from Dublin, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder. Police initially misidentified the suspect as a Somali national before issuing a correction.
Graphic Footage Prompts Calls for Calm
The attack, which was captured in graphic video footage widely circulated on social media, shows an assailant straddling the victim on the ground, systematically striking at his head, face, and neck with what police believe was a kitchen knife recovered from the scene.
The victim suffered extensive, severe injuries to his face, neck, back, and eyes. He remains in a serious condition in hospital.
As the footage went viral online, major political figures and police chiefs issued urgent appeals for calm amid rising tensions. Social media posts have already begun circulating calls for masked protests and unilateral road closures in Belfast, prompting the PSNI to mobilize an increased police presence to deter potential civil unrest.
Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson praised the extraordinary bravery of local bystanders who rushed toward the danger to pull the assailant away from the victim, with one citizen using a hurling stick to fight off the attacker.
”Their willingness to step forward to help another person shows incredible bravery and community spirit,” Henderson said, adding that their quick actions “undoubtedly” saved the victim’s life.
Political Leaders Respond
In London, Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn echoed those sentiments on the floor of the House of Commons, expressing the “profound gratitude of this entire House” to the citizens who intervened.
”To those individuals, I would like to say this – you showed the very best of humanity,” Benn told MPs.
Prime Minister Starmer emphasized a zero-tolerance approach to the violence. “I have absolutely no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence like this on our streets,” the Prime Minister said.
In a rare display of total alignment, the leaders of Northern Ireland’s five main political parties—Sinn Féin, the DUP, the Alliance Party, the UUP, and the SDLP—issued a joint statement branding the incident an act of “depraved and barbaric” violence.
”We are committed to ensuring that violence and hatred in any form will not be allowed to divide our communities,” the cross-party statement read. “We call for calm and for space to allow justice to take its course.”
Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Gavin Robinson described the assault as “medieval” in nature, calling it a “systematic mutilation of a human being,” while demanding swift federal clarity on the suspect’s background to counteract online misinformation.

The PSNI stated that there is currently no indication of a terrorist motive and confirmed they are not looking for any other suspects. Authorities have strongly urged the public to stop sharing the graphic video of the assault, warning that it risks re-traumatizing the victim’s family and could jeopardize the ongoing criminal justice investigation.
