ABUJA – Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), has charged media practitioners nationwide to uphold professionalism and refrain from spreading terrorist propaganda that could demoralize troops and elevate criminal elements.
He issued the directive Wednesday after a high-level strategic session with the Chief of Defence Staff and service chiefs, aimed at refining tactics against escalating insecurity. The meeting addressed recent insurgent surges, including ISWAP attacks overrunning multiple military bases in Borno State within a week.
Meeting Context and Security Gains
Gen. Musa acknowledged military casualties but stressed that security forces have dealt heavier blows to adversaries, neutralizing key terrorist commanders and destroying assets. Recent clashes saw ISWAP invade bases in Goniri, Kukawa, Mainok, Jakana, Marte, and Konduga, killing officers like Umar Farouq while troops repelled assaults with air support, eliminating many fighters.
The minister reaffirmed the armed forces’ resolve, alongside other agencies, to crush terrorism, banditry, and threats to national stability under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s backing. He called for public tips to bolster operations, warning that collaborators providing info or logistics to criminals face accomplice charges.
Key attendees included Permanent Secretary Richard Pheelangwah, CDS Gen. Olufemi Oloyede, Army Chief Lt. Gen. Waidi Shuaibu, Naval Chief Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, Air Chief Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, and Defence Intelligence Chief Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Udieandeye.
This follows intensified efforts like Operation Savannah Shield in North-Central states, redeploying police for community protection amid ongoing “Camp Holocaust” tactics by insurgents using drones.
