DEKALB COUNTY, GA — Olaolukitan Adon Abel, the 26-year-old Nigerian-American accused of orchestrating a violent string of attacks across the Atlanta suburbs earlier this month, has died while in custody.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that detention officers discovered Abel unresponsive in his cell at approximately 6:48 p.m. on Wednesday. Despite immediate life-saving interventions by jail medical staff, Abel was pronounced dead at 7:17 p.m.
While authorities noted there were no immediate signs of foul play or criminal activity, the Sheriff’s Office has launched an internal investigation. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
A Trail of Violence
Abel’s death brings a sudden end to the legal proceedings surrounding a series of attacks that shocked the metro Atlanta area on April 13. Investigators allege that Abel engaged in a calculated spree that spanned multiple locations and claimed three lives.
According to police reports, Abel allegedly targeted victims in disparate settings:
- A Checkers restaurant: Where a woman was shot outside the establishment.
- A residential street: Where Lauren Bullis, an employee of the Department of Homeland Security, was shot and stabbed while walking her dog.
- A shopping plaza: Where Tony Matthews, a homeless man, was shot while he slept. Matthews later succumbed to his injuries.
Evidence gathered during the initial investigation suggested Abel had paid a homeless individual to bypass regulations and purchase a firearm on his behalf—a weapon authorities believe was used in all three attacks.
Legal Background
Abel, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from the United Kingdom, was facing a litany of charges at the time of his death, including multiple counts of murder, aggravated assault, and various firearm-related offenses.
The abrupt conclusion to the case leaves the families of the victims and the local community grappling with a lack of closure. “The investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing,” the Sheriff’s Office stated, “as we seek to ensure full transparency regarding the custody and supervision of the deceased.”
